Dr.
McGinnis was
installed
as President of the American College of
Surgeons in October 2009. This ultimate
accomplishment represents the pinnacle of a
distinguished surgical career, punctuated
with numerous highlights experienced by only
an elite few.
Dr. McGinnis is a graduate of the Medical
College of Georgia, and completed surgical
residencies at the University of Texas
Medical Center in Galveston, Texas, and
Bellevue Hospital in New York, New York.
Dr. McGinnis is board certified in general
surgery and is a fellow of the American
College of Surgeons. He is a past
national president of the American Cancer
Society and has held numerous other
leadership positions at the national and
state levels. He is also a member of the
DeKalb Medical Society, Medical Association
of Georgia and the Georgia Surgical Society,
among others. He was in the private practice
of general and oncologic surgery from 1963
until 2002. Dr. McGinnis and Dr. Kennedy
combined their individual practices together
in 1997 to form DeKalb Surgical
Associates. When he retired from active
clinical practice in 2002, he became more
fully devoted to his interests in improving
the quality of surgical care across the
nation. He has continued to work
tirelessly, through various appointments at
the American Cancer Society and the American
College of Surgeons, to assure that patients
throughout the US will be assured of
receiving the highest quality of surgeon
care available.
In 1998, the Distinguished Service Award
was presented to Dr. McGinnis by the
American College of Surgeons, the most
prestigious honor that can be bestowed on a
Fellow in the College. In 2001, he served
as their Second Vice President. His
recent election to the Presidency is a
fitting crowning achievement for someone who
has dedicated his career and life to the
development and improvement of the care of
the surgical patient.
