Dr. Stieber joined DeKalb Surgical
Associates in 2008. He had previously been
on staff at Emory University since 1992. We
are thrilled to have Dr. Stieber bring to
DeKalb his knowledge, experience, and
expertise in dealing with complex liver,
biliary and pancreatic problems. Dr.
Stieber is truly one of the top experts in
this difficult area.
Dr. Stieber’s expertise includes treatment
of hepatic, biliary and pancreatic cancers,
management of complex benign hepaticobiliary
and pancreatic diseases, and other abdominal
surgeries. A graduate of the State
University of Milan (Italy) Medical School,
Dr. Stieber completed his general surgical
residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center
in New York City. He completed his
fellowship in solid organ transplantation
from the University of Pittsburgh,
where his mentor was Dr. Thomas Starzl,
who is widely considered the “Father of
Liver Transplantation.”
For 16 years, Dr. Stieber was a senior
surgeon in the Liver Transplant Program at
Emory University. During this time,
he was instrumental in the growth of the
adult program, which went from about 30
transplants a year before his tenure, to a
peak of 102 transplants. He also
distinguished himself as a teacher, both of
general surgery residents and liver
transplant fellows and won a Golden Apple
Award in 2004. Both at the University
of Pittsburgh and at Emory, he performed and
taught numerous general surgery,
hepatobiliary, pancreatic and vascular
surgery procedures, usually in very
difficult circumstances in transplant
patients. Dr. Stieber brings 23 years of
hepatobiliary and pancreatic expertise to
DeKalb Surgical. Although he will perform
general surgery procedures, his emphasis
will be on liver, bile ducts and pancreas
procedures and he will continue to develop
and refine a novel technique he designed for
open liver resections.
Dr. Stieber is on staff at DeKalb Medical
central campus and Northside Hospital. You
